The 3rd Methods-Forum in 2024 is dedicated to a highly relevant topic that is playing an increasingly important role in the field of evidence synthesis: "Opportunities, Limitations and Risks of Artificial Intelligence in Evidence Synthesis in Health Care".
The continuous advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI), automation, and language processing have a growing impact on how evidence syntheses are created and utilised. The development of AI language models (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude) and the evolution of automation tools (e.g., ASReview, Laser AI, DistillerSR) present new opportunities and challenges in areas such as search strategy development, screening and data extraction, as well as in risk of bias assessment. This creates opportunities for faster conducting or updating of evidence syntheses, which can be of great significance for evidence synthesis creators and users. In the framework of the 2024 Methods-Forum, we will illuminate the various steps in evidence synthesis and the role of AI language models in these steps.
However, the use of AI for evidence synthesis requires a comprehensive understanding of its strengths and weaknesses. To create high quality evidence syntheses with the support of AI, it is crucial to be aware of the limitations of AI language models and automation tools. At the 2024 Methods-Forum, we aim to reflect on whether and how they can be combined with traditional methods of evidence synthesis.
